The culture problem hidden behind your compliance program
Talking to executives and Ethics & Compliance leaders, I hear continuous examples of increased pressure. Sometimes it's based on a need to quickly scale up production, but often it's because of market uncertainty, cost pressure, and ambiguity around AI integration.
While policies, processes, and frameworks are critical, it's easy to overlook the role culture plays in driving behavior and outcomes.
I was honored to be invited to speak at the #HETHICO conference about why a focus on cultural health is vital, why companies often fail to change culture, and three key insights our team has learned that make a difference.
One of my favorite sessions continued on the same topic of culture, with practical insights from large healthcare companies from Tosin U., Stephen Nguyen-Duc and Ghadeer Alyacoub . Here were some of the insights shared:
- We have to stop assuming that what we put on paper is what happens in reality
- We must be sensitive to the cultures in the markets we operate. If we come with an HQ country-centric mindset, people might listen politely, but it won't change behaviors
- Ethics/integrity questions need to be integrated into every recruitment process, focusing on past behavior
- Ethics ambassadors can be powerful change agents that spread the message that ethics is everyone's responsibility
I'm deeply grateful to Anne-Sophie Bricca for excellent moderation and the team Aline Lautenberg , Julie BONHOMME , Marta Paci and Claudia Peters for putting together a fantastic event and great opportunities for the function and the healthcare industry to share and learn together.
Another session that stood out to me was listening to Tjerk Schlufter and Meredith Kennedy insights on identifying and managing reputational risk. Loved the permission to make mistake Tjerk!
And while we missed Nadège ROCHEL it was great to see her on screen close off the meeting with powerful words of encouragement and challenge to the E&C function!
It was a special joy to be joined by my dear colleague Andreas Almlöf 🎉
